Found something? Do this first

Asbestos left whole and undisturbed is low risk. The danger starts when it is cut, drilled, sanded or broken, so the first step is to stop and leave it alone.

  1. Stop work on it. No sanding, drilling, cutting, scraping or water blasting, and don't sweep up dust or broken bits.
  2. Keep people out. Close the door on the room or tape off the area, and keep kids and pets away from any broken pieces.
  3. Get it tested. A sample analysed by an accredited lab tells you whether there's asbestos in it and what kind of licence the removal needs.

Why use Bendigo Asbestos Removal

Asbestos removal in Victoria is licensed work, and the licence must match the material. Every job is carried out by a WorkSafe Victoria licensed removalist working in the Bendigo district.

The right licence, every time.

Only Class A licence holders are engaged for friable work, and Class A or B holders for bonded work over 10 m².

Tested before it's priced.

Untested material is sampled and lab-tested first, so you are never quoted for removal you don't need.

Asbestos services

From a single cracked eave to a factory roof, every type of asbestos work is covered. Choose the one closest to your job.

Textured and vermiculite ceilings

Lots of Bendigo lounge rooms and hallways from the 1950s to the 1980s still have a sprayed ceiling: the bumpy "popcorn" finish, or a grainy, sparkly vermiculite coat. Some contain asbestos and many don't, and you can't tell by looking. When a sprayed ceiling does test positive, it's usually treated as friable, which means it needs a Class A removalist, a sealed enclosure and independent air monitoring.

They're easy to overlook and easy to disturb. If you've got one and you're planning to paint, patch, put in downlights or pull it down, read the guide to popcorn ceiling removal in Bendigo first.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you've found.

Where it is, what it looks like and roughly how much. Photos help. Don't break off a piece to show anyone.

  2. Test before you quote.

If it hasn't been tested, a sample goes to an accredited lab so the job is priced on facts.

  3. Licensed removal.

A WorkSafe Victoria licensed removalist notifies WorkSafe, seals the area and removes the material.

  4. Clearance and disposal.

An independent clearance inspection, then waste wrapped and taken to a licensed facility.

What makes asbestos in Bendigo different

Asbestos was used in Australian homes for decades and banned nationally at the end of 2003. Victorian Government advice is that homes built before the mid-1980s are highly likely to have some, and homes built up to 1990 may too. Around Bendigo, that's a big share of the housing.

  • Post-war fibro suburbs. Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Eaglehawk, Long Gully and Flora Hill have streets of 1950s–70s fibro and weatherboard homes with asbestos cement in walls, eaves and wet areas.
  • Goldfields houses with later additions. Plenty of brick and timber cottages in central Bendigo, Castlemaine and Heathcote picked up a fibro sleep-out, lean-to kitchen or bathroom between the 1950s and 1980s.
  • Sheds, garages and fences. Corrugated asbestos roofs and fibro fences are common on older blocks and farms, and they're the first things to crack in hail or high wind.
  • Local disposal limits. Eaglehawk Landfill takes domestic asbestos only, up to 10 m² a load, double-wrapped and booked in on the City's form. Anything bigger has to go with a licensed removalist.

What affects the price

Every asbestos job is priced on what's actually there. The main things that move the price are the type of asbestos (friable work costs far more than bonded), how much of it there is, how hard it is to reach, whether air monitoring and a clearance certificate are needed, and the weight going to the tip. A ceiling in a two-storey house costs more than the same ceiling on a single level.

Asbestos removal in Bendigo: common questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Victoria?

Only a small amount of bonded (non-friable) asbestos: no more than 10 m² in total, and no more than an hour of removal work in any seven days. Friable asbestos must only be removed by a licensed removalist. Even for small jobs, the Victorian Government doesn't recommend doing it yourself without asbestos awareness training.

How do I know if it's asbestos?

You can't tell by looking. A small sample is taken by someone trained to do it safely and analysed by an accredited laboratory. Until the result comes back, treat the material as if it does contain asbestos.

What's the difference between friable and bonded asbestos?

Bonded (non-friable) asbestos is locked into cement or another binder, like fibro sheet, eaves and roofing. Friable asbestos can be crumbled by hand and releases fibres easily, like some sprayed ceilings and old pipe lagging. Friable removal needs a Class A licence; bonded removal over 10 m² needs a Class B licence or higher.

Do I need a clearance certificate?

After licensed removal, an independent person must inspect the area and issue a clearance certificate before it's used again. The exception is bonded asbestos of 10 m² or less in total. On a home job, the licence holder you hire arranges it.

Where can I take asbestos in Bendigo?

Eaglehawk Landfill accepts small domestic loads (up to 10 m², double-wrapped, with the City's application form). Castlemaine Transfer Station takes small booked loads for Mount Alexander Shire. Asbestos must never go in a kerbside bin. See asbestos removal areas around Bendigo for details.
